What Is Breast Implant Exchange Surgery?

Breast implant exchange, also referred to as breast implant replacement or revision, is a procedure to remove and replace existing breast implants. It is often performed to:

  • Update implant size, shape, or type
  • Address implant-related issues such as rupture or capsular contracture
  • Correct asymmetry or changes following weight fluctuations or ageing
  • Restore a more natural look or feel
  • Remove implants entirely if no longer desired

The goal is always to improve patient comfort, health and confidence while achieving results that are in harmony with your body.

Common Reasons for Implant Replacement

While implants are long-lasting, they are not considered lifetime devices. Some common reasons women choose to exchange or remove their implants include:

Capsular Contracture
A tightening of scar tissue around the implant, causing discomfort, firmness, or visible distortion.

Implant Rupture or Deflation
Although rare, implants can wear out or rupture over time. Replacing them restores both safety and appearance.

Desire for Change
You may wish to change the size or type of implant, or decide not to have implants at all.

Aesthetic Updates
Changes due to ageing, lifestyle or pregnancy can impact appearance. Exchange surgery allows a refreshed look.

Peace of Mind
Replacing older implants including outdated or recalled types like PIP can offer reassurance and updated materials in line with current safety guidance.

In rare cases, patients with older implants may wish to discuss concerns such as BIA-ALCL. Hiroshi will explain any health considerations during your consultation.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery is usually quicker than with primary breast augmentation, especially when performed under local anaesthetic and sedation.

  • First few days: Mild swelling and discomfort, managed with pain relief

  • 2 to 3 weeks: Return to work and normal daily routines
  • 6 weeks: Swelling settles and results become more defined

We provide clear aftercare guidance and unlimited post-operative support to ensure your recovery is smooth and supported.

Risks and Considerations

As with any surgical procedure, it’s important to understand the potential risks:

  • Infection or bleeding (uncommon)
  • Scar tissue formation or capsular contracture
  • Temporary changes in nipple sensation
  • Dissatisfaction with cosmetic results (discussed in consultation)
  • Implant rupture or the need for future revision

Hiroshi will explain all considerations clearly during your consultation. Choosing an experienced, specialist surgeon helps minimise risk and ensures the most suitable approach for your needs.

Your most common questions answered

Have a question about our procedures? Call us to find out more +44 (0) 121 456 8149 or check out the following frequently asked questions from customers.

Can I change the size of my implants?

Yes, during exchange surgery, you can opt to go bigger or smaller, or remove implants completely.

How long do breast implants last?

Most implants last between 10 to 15 years, but replacement is only needed if there’s a reason to do so.

How much does breast implant exchange surgery cost?

Guide pricing is available on our finance page, and we offer flexible 0% and interest-bearing finance options, subject to status.

Is breast implant exchange painful?

Discomfort is typically mild and manageable. You’ll have a full recovery plan tailored to your needs.

Will I have new scars?

In most cases, Hiroshi reuses your existing incision lines, minimising visible scarring.

What is a capsulectomy?

A Capsulectomy involves removing the capsule of scar tissue surrounding the implant. Hiroshi may recommend this if capsular contracture is present.

What if I want my breast implants removed with no replacement?

That’s absolutely an option. Hiroshi can also advise if additional reshaping, such as a breast lift, might help improve shape.
